I Need an Ark Print
Sunday, 15 March 2009
It has been raining here in North Carolina for days and days.  It is cold and muddy and just plain yucky.

So, I went outside to get the paper this morning, and what is curled up on the rug under our carport? A cute little black lab puppy.

Great.  My friend Peggy is having her knee replaced in 2 weeks and she will be staying here with her two little Maltese dogs while she recovers.

So let's get a count: David and Me, two senior citizens, six dogs and a teenage girl.

HELP!!

Ups and Downs Print

Dad was a stock broker for over fifty years.  He is constantly interested in the stock market, and I am constantly "filtering" the news to him.

After the disaster on Monday, I hid the newspaper on Tuesday and told him the delivery guy must have skipped us by accident.  (Remember This?)

After a three day rally, it looks like things are looking up in the market, so newspaper service has resumed.

He just commented that he could not remember a three day rally that offered such good news for the economy.

I don't even have Alzheimer's and I agree with him!

Dad loves "Dancing with the Stars".

I am so happy to have him watch a program for two hours that makes him smile, clap and cheer.  He says that all of the stars look like professional dancers.

One particular favorite emerged last night in Holly Madison, the former Playboy Bunny and girlfriend of Hugh Hefner.

"He's older than I am." Dad said when I told him who she was.  "Maybe I could have a shot with her."

I guess there has been a sufficient mourning period for Dad.  I see now that he is completely over Anna Nicole. Remember This?

Go Holly!

Guess Who We've Got our Hanes on Now! Print

When Dad and I were finished with my iterview of his life story on StoryCorps yesterday, the next people in line were a lovely lady, probably in her eighties, dressed to the nines and a man that appeared to be her son.

The girl running the radio booth let us know a tidbit about her history.

"She owns Hanes Underwear." she informed us.

"So do I." replied my Dad.

"No, Dad she owns the company, not just a pair of Hanes underwear!"

"Ohhhh." He said with a chuckle.

A Wonderful Life Print

I interviewed my Dad in a big Silver Windstream trailer today.

That sounds odd, it's true, but we were a part of StoryCorps, which is an National Public Radio sponsored program to enter personal  life stories into the Library of Congress.

I think his life is worthy of being recorded for generations to come.  To hear about his wonderful parents, his blissful childhood, his loving marriage, and living in the nut house with David and me.

Even more importantly, I wanted a copy of the CD to remember his life in case either one of us forgets.

I would recommend to all of you that you audio and video tape your loved ones' stories.  It sure made me feel good today.

One Hour Forward, Two Steps back Print

I have been so pleased with myself for the last couple of weeks. I have managed to get Dad tired enough doing activities during the day, that he has his days and nights back in the right order.  We are also eating dinner earlier, so he feels tired earlier.

This is HUGE for us, since David and I both work full time jobs, and Dad's 1:00 a.m. to noon sleeping schedule was not working out for us at all.

For the last ten days or so, he has been to bed by around 10:00at night, and up by 8:30 in the morning.  A normal schedule, finally.

When I turned on my computer this morning, I got an email reminding me that daylight savings time requires us to change the clocks this weekend.

If this messes up my hard work, I may just not change the clocks at all!

Darn that daylight savings time!

Katie It Is Print

If any of you remember the television show "Murphy Brown" starring Candace Bergen, you may remember that one of the running jokes on the show was her inability to find and keep a good secretary.

That is my luck with home health aides.  In just over four years I have had Katie, Edna, Samantha, Peggy, Inky and now Carlie.  Talk about turnover!

However, Dad still calls the aide Katie.  She was the first one, and she was here the longest.

It's kind of like the situation with our dog Sierra (Remember This?)

It may sound strange in the interview, but everyone gets a new name when they come to work here: Katie.

I guess I can never hire a man!

Back in Time Print

David and I rented the Angelina Jolie movie, "Changelings" and Dad decided to come in the living room and watch with us.

Whenever we rent a contemporary movie, he usually gets about 10 minutes in, proclaims whatever movie we happen to be watching "the strangest movie he has ever seen" and then retreats to his crossword puzzle or to his room to watch The Weather Channel.

Not only did he watch the entire two plus hours, but he went on and on about how well done it was, and how much he enjoyed it.

Anyone who has seen the movie knows, it is not the happiest of subjects.

Then it came to me.  It is set in the 1920s and 1930s and he was completely enthralled by the cars, the clothing, the buildings he remembers so well.

I'm going to see if I can find another movie set in that era and test my theory.... Stay tuned.

Blood Suckers Print
Sunday, 01 March 2009

David has a rare blood type, so he gives platelets to the Red Cross every couple of months.

It takes about two hours and they hook the volunteers up to headphones and a movie, since the process takes two hours or more to transfuse the blood and remove the platelets.

Dad and I were asking him about it at dinner last night, and I inquired as to what movie he got to see.

"Dracula?" My Dad joked.

Wouldn't that be appropriate!

Wonderful Gift Print

Yesterday I turned thirty-nine.  Yep, the last year of my reckless, carefree (ha ha) life.

I never expected Dad to remember my Birthday, but when I came home from work yesterday, on the chalkboard where I write the day and date every day it read,

"Thursday February 26th - Happy Birthday"

The "presence" of that memory was one of the best "presents" I could ever ask for.

Forty - Here I come!
