It's a Human! Print
Tuesday, 20 May 2008

My sister and brother-in-law announced that they will be providing us with the first baby in the family early next year.  CONGRATULATIONS TO SUE & JOE.

She told Dad last night, but he had forgotten by the time David and I were talking about it later on.

"I hope it likes to be petted." Said my sweet Dad.  "I've never had a human grandchild before!"

I bet the four-legged grandchildren will be jealous!

If Dad Lives to Be 100 Print
Monday, 19 May 2008

Every so often, Dad will ask me if he has anything left in his condo (we are renting it out) and each time, I tell him that  all of his things are upstairs in our attic.

Whenever he brings it up, I always suggest that he go through a box a week, but he generally declines when I ask him to do it, using any excuse like, "It's getting dark and I can't see very well." or "I'm kind of tired, I'll start tomorrow."

There are about 250 boxes.  In the past three years he has gone through one.  One.

I told him at this rate, it will take him 20 years to go through it all.

"Well, that gives me another reason to shoot for 100!" He replied.

Flew the Coup Print

I heard the stories of so many caregivers at the Today's Caregiver Magazine's Fearless Caregiver Conference in Florida this week.  It was a day full of learning, sharing, and support.

I have never been in a room with 300+ caregivers before.  What an experience!  I plan to attend as many as I can in the future and would encourage you to attend if you can.  You can find more information by clicking here.

When I got home from the airport last night, Dad asked me if I was just getting in from work.

"Yes." I fibbed.

That was a sure sign that all of my scheduling and arragements for Dad were a success.

He had no idea I was even gone, and I got  THREE DAYS of rest and relaxtion!

What a COUP!

The Party of His Dreams Print
Wednesday, 14 May 2008

Dad will be turning Eighty years old in July, and my sister Nancy is coming up from Atlanta for a "surprise party".

She asked who we should invite, where we should have it, what kind of cake, etc.

So, I decided that I would just ask Dad if he could have the birthday party of his dreams, who would bet there, where would it be and what he would like if he could have anything he wanted.

Once I know all of the answers, I can begin to plan the party he wants and it can still be a "surprise" by July!  He will think I am the BEST PARTY PLANNER EVER!

And best of all, he will be surprised!

Thank Goodness for Free Nights and Weekends Print

My sister Nancy called last night to chat with Dad and I handed him the cell phone and walked into the living room to watch a movie with David.

Each time I would walk by on the way to get a drink, go to the bathroom, etc. I would hear a sampling of the conversation which on Dad's end consisted of weather in Atlanta where Nancy lives, weather here in Pfafftown, NC and Nancy's new job.

We finished watching the movie and I went to check on Dad and he was just finishing up his conversation.

Her patient attitude allowed him to repeat, and repeat, and repeat.

I'm glad there are no such thing as long distance fees anymore!  His Alzheimer's would have put us in the poorhouse with phone calls alone!

Dad should be a judge for Ice Skating Competition.  We were watching the world championship last night, and he was completely mesmerized by the quadruple jumps and the lutzes and triple flips.  He said over and over how amazing it all was and how each one was the best he had ever seen.

Even if the skater fell or made a huge mistake, by the end of the performance, he was clapping and calling it "flawless".

Seems like that is the same way he feels about my performance as a caregiver.

Whenever I feel like I am "falling" on the job or have failed, He always does or says something that makes me feel like I am the best in the world.

Happy Mother's Day to All from KnowItAlz!

Lights OUT Print

We had a couple of tornadoes rip through North Carolina this week, and being that Dad is totally fascinated by the weather, this was an unusually spectacular event around here.

He was watching the coverage on the TV in his room, and about every  five or ten minutes, he walked into our room to tell David and me about all of the tornadoes he saw when he was in the army in Oklahoma and Texas in the 1950s.

Then he would go back to his room, see the news again, and make the trip back to our room to tell us the same stories.

This was every ten minutes for at least three hours.  We were up until after 2:00am!

Finally, I went to the basement and turned off the breaker to the power in Dad's room.
As soon as he thought we lost power, he went to sleep and forgot all about it!

The next morning when he read about the horrible storms in the paper, he said that he was glad he could sleep right through a storm like that.

"I slept like a baby." He said.

The kind of baby that wakes you up every 2 hours, perhaps!

Yesterday, I went to the grocery store and got my usual order of bananas.  Four ripe and four green.  That way, by the time the four ripe ones have been eaten, the green ones are ripe.

Immediately after Dad ate his breakfast banana, I still had two left from last week, and so I offered one to Little Sam (which she began to eat while handing Dad his pills) and laid another on the counter for Edna, who was in the next room.

Within ten seconds, I caught a glimpse of Dad eating Edna's banana before she had a chance to snatch it off the counter, having forgotten he had just finished one.

How nice that Dad's his new soul-mate is an eighteen year-old, banana loving, blond-haired girl.

It is a Little Outrageous Print

Today, Samantha took Dad to physical therapy, and as usual, they stopped in at Borders Books for an iced coffee and a New york Times for Dad.

For some reason, when the cashier made the announcement that the total was $9.65, Dad had a small fit.

"That is outrageous!" He fumed as he put down the drink and the paper.  He refused to pay that "ridiculous price" for two coffees and a newspaper.

Dad thinks that should be about $1.25.

Samantha called to lament that he had made her leave her coffee behind also, as he loudly commented that this would be his last trip to that particular store!

Until Friday.

Short Primary Season for Dad Print
Tuesday, 06 May 2008
North Carolina votes in the primary today.  Finally!

I guess anyone who has seen CNN in the past 2 weeks knows that.

When I got up this morning, I had a note from Dad that read:  Kathy - Am I registered to vote in Pfafftown (our town) tomorrow?

I wonder who He'll vote for.  I bet he'll ask me who Barack Obama is and if there is really a woman running for President.

He is the only person I know who is not sick to death of the hearing about the whole darned thing day and night!
