Dad has a defibrillator that delivers quite a jolt to his heart when it beats over 140 beats per minute. Cherie took him to the Electrophysiologist yesterday since he has had over thirty shocks during the last few months. Usually, the doctors will set the threshold to a higher BPM than 140 in order to spare patients the traumatic experience of having multiple shocks. We decided after he stopped breathing at 143 BPM this summer that we would lower the threshold. More shocking, less dying was my rationale. The doctor asked him yesterday if the shocks were causing any psychological trauma. "I've been shocked?" He asked with amazement. And this, ladies and gentlemen concludes the psychological portion of the exam. |
