I have been a paid caregiver for almost 10 years. I took care of my grandmother years ago until we had to have skilled nursing, after that I knew this was my calling. The sweet lady I care for now is 96 years young! Isn't she beautiful! Her family came into town this past week, do you think they spoke to her or even acknowledged she was there? NO! They treated her like she was a piece of furniture. They ignored her the whole time. No one even asked me if I would like to go home (I felt like I was in the way) since they were there. They hardly even looked at her and they seemed shocked that I interacted with her. How sad. Do you ignore your pet when they are sick? Do you ignore another human when they have the flu? What is up with this? I wonder if they think they will catch it or something. I don't understand. I just hope they don't get very sick and need another family member because I don't think they care for each other much. I am completely shocked. I tried to explain to one family member how she enjoys going out to eat and he told me, "Oh, she doesn't know what's going on." Well, she may forget about it as soon as we leave the restaurant but she enjoys the moment. I think if we would live in the moment we may appreciate the time we have left here on earth much more. I love to see her smile. She doesn't talk much anymore but I looked over at her the other night, she was in her recliner. She was motioning me to come over. I got to her chair and asked her what she needed, she said, " I like it when you...." Then she pointed to her head. I know she likes her head rubbed. I began rubbing it and she put her head back, closed her eyes and smiled her beautiful smile. How can you not fall in love with the elderly?! |
