ImageI am A new caregiver for my new Mother In Law. I married her son after an 8 year romance. I noticed a decline in her two years ago, but attributed it to her age of 83.After cooking one day and burning the kitchen down and realizing that she had more of a problem than just " normal forgetfulness", she was diagnosed with moderate to severe AD.
Her older son lives with her and works night shift so I stay with her everyday M-F 4-12 pm. It really is different  for us when the "sun goes down". She has has her worst time in the evening, the forgetfulness, the confusionand the darkness.  Her "world" is solemn as I am the "new girl". Sometimes she remembers me and sometimes not. I really miss her a lot. She was my shopping buddy and my movie buddy and just an all around good friend. We used to talk about her life and the life she wanted her son to have. Now she can hardly remember her son and sometimes confuses him with her deceased husband. They look so much alike, I can understand the confusion. I miss her!
She stays mostly at home and doesn't even recognize her surroundings. I find myself always having to repeat everything I say and when I look into her eyes I wonder if she even hears me. She walks with a walker for the last two months now, after an event she created that someone shot her in the leg and caused her not to be able to walk. It took me 31 days to convince her to get out of bed. She still thinks someone shot her and is very scared all the time, especially when the front door opens.
I am amazed at the way the mind works and am still trying to educate myself about dementia and AD. It just appaulls me. I miss my new husband and have been away from him at night for four months now. I am in for the long haul and we have both agreed that it is best for now for me to be there. When I tried to bring her to our new house, the confusion was enormous. I am most thankful for this website and learned of it on Hallmark Tv and ask they you all only Pray for us.
